Ever heard of Music “Mash-Ups”?

June 15, 2006 § 1 Comment

Totally unbeknownst to me, a new music trend has arrived: Mash-Ups.

Whether it’s a raging phenomenon or flickering fad, I have to admit I’m hooked.

It started for me with a CD my girlfriend received as a gift, and just like the seemingly unique car you bought, suddenly it’s everywhere.

What is it?

A Mash-up is where two or more songs are combined to make one song; a fast song is slowed down or a slow song sped up. You’ve probably heard of a similar technique DJs use called crossfading, where the end of one song is blended into the beginning of another.

The ones I find most interesting are when an old song is blended with a new song from a totally different genre. For example, blending ZZ Top’s La Grange with Gwen Stefani’s Rich Girl. The result is mesmerizing.

Check these out and tell me what you think!

ZZ Top / Gwen Stefani
Billy Joel / Ludacris Jay-Z
The Cure / Ying Yang Twins
